When looking to make adaptations to our homes, the costs can mount up fast and if you aren’t eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant then the whole process can seem daunting and in some cases, even impossible.
It is important to remember though that you can’t put a price on independence and living in the home you might have worked hard to build over many years.
It is also worth bearing in mind that there may be other options out there, of which the DFG grant is just one…

Having served our local Herefordshire communities for 30 years, many of those spent undertaking projects to make homes more accessible for private residents, councils and housing associations. We know how difficult it can be to find the information you might need, particularly if you fail to meet the criteria for a DFG grant.

As an important part of our independent and comprehensive service we have undertaken some research on behalf of our local communities, especially those at risk of falling through the cracks when it might come to getting some much-needed help with their mobility adaptations.

Here are some alternative funding options:

  • Disability-grants.org – A range of information on the help that might be available from charities and trusts can be accessed through their site with dedicated resources for disabled adults and the elderly
  • The SSAFA – A charity dedicated to supporting veterans of the armed forces and their families, they can provide financial support and advice for those living with physical impairment
  • Turn2us.org.uk – A not for profit site where you can search for grants for disability adaptations in Herefordshire, by entering your postcode
  • Community Care – A list of charities giving grants

At GB Electrical and Building Services Ltd we can also provide help and impartial advice, quotes at a time to suit you and we can even offer help if you need an occupational therapist to assess and assemble a report on your behalf. If you wish to find your own occupational consultant you can arrange an assessment with our affiliate Occupational Therapist or by searching The Royal College of Occupational Therapist’s website here, or you can also talk to your G.P or healthcare professional.

Our reputation throughout Herefordshire owes a lot to our comprehensive and bespoke bathroom adaptations service, but in fact we do much more than that, from standard bathroom adaptations to fully bespoke, stylish bathroom installations as well as windows and doors, kitchen installations and a range of other general repairs and disabled adaptations all through the home.
Our specialist teams are Gas Safe registered, NICEIC & Safe Contractor approved, as well as FENSA approved for double-glazed windows and doors and OFTEC registered for heating. We are also ISO 9001 certified.

That means your project is in the safest hands from day one until completion.
Remember, if you aren’t eligible for the Disabled Facilities Grant, there may still be help, advice and support out there to help you stay in your own home, living with dignity, independence and the adaptations you need.
